Teri Ann Garr was born in Lakewood, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland. Her father, Eddie Garr (born Edward Leo Gonnoud), was a vaudeville singer, comedian, and actor, whose work culminated in her briefly leading role in Broadway Tobacco Road. Her mother, Phyllis Lind Garr (born Emma Schmotzer), was a dancer, a Rocette, a dress queen, and a model.

Her father was born in Ireland and her maternal grandparents were Austrian immigrants. Garr has two older brothers, Ed and Phil. She spent her early life in Cleveland, and the family moved for a while to New Jersey before settling in Los Angeles, California.

When Garr was 11, her father died in Los Angeles of heart disease. She recalled that her death “left us, with no money of any kind. And I saw my mother as an incredibly strong, intelligent woman who put three children in college one of my brothers is a surgeon. so we always had to try harder. That was put on me early. in ballet.

“I walked for three hours, four hours a day; my feet would bleed, ”she recalls. “I used to ride buses all over the city just to get to the best dance schools. Don’t just stand there and be quiet, push yourself.” In New York, she studied at Actors Studio and at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute.

Garr graduated from North Hollywood High School, and studied. California State University, Northridge two years before leaving school and moving to New York City to pursue a career in acting.

Early in her career, she was called Terri Garr, Terry Garr, Teri Hope, or Terry Carr. Her film debut was as much an addition to A Swingin ‘Affair (1963). In her senior year, she was auditioned for by the cast of a Los Angeles-based West Side Story company, where she met one of the most important people in her first career, David Winters, who became her friend, dance teacher and mentor. Winters imitated him in many of her earlier films and projects.

Garr started out as a back-and-forth dancer in unofficial roles in youth-focused films and TV shows edited by Winters, including the Pajama Party (a beach party film), T.A.M.I. Show, Shindig !, Shivaree, Hullabaloo, Movin ‘with Nancy, and six other features of Elvis Presley (many of which were also re-edited by Winters, including Presley’s highly acclaimed film, Viva Las Vegas).

When asked in a magazine interview about how she got jobs in many of Presley’s films, Garr replied, “One of the dancers at the West Side Story (David Winters) started making choreographed films, and whatever work she got, I did. one of the girls she was going to hire. So she was chosen to do the Viva Las Vegas. That was her first film. 

She was often seen on television during this time, playing as a travelling dancer on many music shows, and with her friend Toni Basil, like Shindig! and Hullabaloo. In 1966, Garr appeared once in Batman (episode seven, unauthorised). In 1968, she appeared in both the Andy Griffith Show and the Mayberry R.F.D. and was featured in two editions of It Takes a Thief.
