His mother, Agnes DeMarco, later changed her name to McBriare Samuel Lanyon DeMarco, after her father left when Mac was 4 and refused to pay child support. DeMarco is also of Italian descent. 

DeMarco attended McKernan School for junior high. During this time he started playing the guitar and lessons with his grandmother. While in high school he was in a number of bands, including the indie rock band The Meat Cleavers, another R&B band.
