He then returned to Berkeley, where his mother abandoned him and his biological father; McNamara stayed with him for several years until his mother returned with a new family friend, who moved the family to the North Shore of Hawaii in 1978.
At the age of eleven, McNamara followed in the footsteps of his younger brother and began surfing in Sunset, Waimea, and abroad, seeking greater prestige. He joined and starred in the prestigious Hawaiian Triple Crown Series at the age of seventeen and began gaining major sponsors of major Japanese brands.
For the next ten years, both brothers joined the race circuit, traveling and speaking Japanese fluently.
